Sustainability in construction:

where to start?

The construction sector is under increasing pressure to embrace decarbonisation and support the UK on its drive to hit Net Zero by 2050. Businesses large and small are having to comply with ESG regulation, report on their impacts and meet the requirements of customers who want to see robust sustainability credentials. Embedding sustainable practice not only helps with compliance but can future proof operations by helping secure new work, reduce operating costs and secure competitive advantage.

Sustainability in construction

The built environment is directly responsible for around 40% of global energy use.  Sustainable buildings | UNEP – UN Environment Programme. Drastically reducing its carbon footprint is critical if we are to meet our commitment under the Paris climate agreement to limit global temperature rises to 1.5C by 2100 and avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

There is little doubt that traditional construction methods are hugely carbon intensive, and the race is on to find lower impact alternatives. It is an exciting time for the sector as it applies its problems solving skills and innovation to serve the triple bottom line of people, profit and planet. Those businesses at the forefront of that transformation, be it major developers of SMEs within the supply chain, can play a key role in helping secure a more sustainable future.

Embracing sustainability in construction

According to the World Green Building Council, green buildings will represent a $24.7 trillion investment opportunity by 2030. Significant time and effort is being spent exploring construction materials and methods which reduce environmental impact and maximise energy efficiency.

Sustainable construction is the practice of creating and using structures that are environmentally friendly and resource-efficient throughout their life cycle. This means buildings that minimise energy and water use, reduce waste, and use recycled and renewable materials.

It should also focus on being nature positive by protecting habitats and enhancing the natural environment. New Biodiversity Net Gain legislation came into force in February requiring major developers to provide at least 110% of the biodiversity value found on the site prior to their intervention. It is critical that the construction sector reduces negative impact but there is also increasing emphasis on regenerative practice.
