GHG Emissions Baseline Calculations & Carbon Reporting

Overview

Understanding your company’s carbon footprint or GHG emissions isn’t just a ‘nice-to-have’ anymore; it’s a business imperative that is being driven by legal compliance such as SECR Reporting and customer or supply chain demands. Large corporates now increasingly require suppliers to give them emissions and impact data.

If you are feeling these pressures, then our experienced consultants can help you to calculate your GHG Baseline Emissions so that you have a full and detailed insight into your emissions and impacts. From there we can then help you to establish your Carbon Reduction Plan and other mitigation measures.

And don’t think of this as just a barrier or a cost to your business. Achieving operational efficiencies through reducing your emissions also reduces cost and improves productivity, which in the long term have a positive impact on your bottom line.

Here are three key reasons why you need to start thinking seriously about getting your GHG Emissions calculations completed:

Regulatory Compliance & Legal Obligations

Failing to accurately measure and report GHG emissions can result in significant fines, legal repercussions, and harm to reputation. Therefore, establishing a GHG Baseline Emissions assessment is not just a best practice but often a legal necessity that ensures businesses stay compliant with local, national, and international laws.

Supply Chain Pressure

Large corporates and Tier 1 companies are legally required to report their emissions and impacts. And they are passing this down their supply chains by requesting Scope 1 and 2 data as a minimum, and some even requiring some Scope 3 data.

Risk Mitigation & Strategic Planning

Understanding the carbon footprint provides businesses with invaluable data that can inform future strategy. This isn’t just good for the planet; it’s good for business. Accurate GHG Baseline Emissions assessments enable companies to better predict, prepare for, and mitigate these risks.

Who is it for?

Regulations like the UK’s Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) policy requires qualifying businesses to disclose their energy use, carbon footprint, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as part of their annual financial reporting. It is only a matter of time before GHG reporting requirements are extended to smaller companies. The savvy ones are reporting emissions data on a voluntary basis to get greater insight into their r operations so they can build resilience, cut costs and gain a competitive advantage.

However, not all businesses have the in-house capabilities to undertake an effective GHG emissions benchmarking exercise. Navigating the sustainability landscape can be challenging. Accessing, measuring and tracking reliable data is often a stumbling block for companies wanting to do the right thing.

What’s involved?

Navigating your legal obligations and requirements to reach Net Zero and at the same time satisfying supply chain pressures and demands can be daunting.

Measuring emissions requires businesses to identify which of their activities are responsible for GHG emissions. This encompasses everything from fuel consumed by vehicles to the energy that heats buildings. Where are you generating the most emissions and where are the greatest opportunities to reduce your environmental impact?

Wylde will support your business in establishing its GHG emissions baseline which can then be used to identify reduction opportunities, set targets and monitor progress.

Emissions releasing activities are organised into three categories:

Scope 1

Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources.

Scope 2

Indirect emissions from the generation of purchased energy.

Scope 3

All indirect emissions (not included in scope 2) that occur in the value chain of the reporting company, including both upstream and downstream emissions.

We will take you through a robust and effective baseline programme so that you are ready to move on to the next stage of your sustainability journey:

Defining the Scope

You will participate in a one to two hour online session to define and understand the scope of your GHG Emissions, encompassing scopes 1, 2 and 3. The session will involve us getting to know more about your business, its operations and activities. You can only measure emissions if you understand exactly what needs measuring and where. What sites, facilities and operations will be incorporated? We leave no stone unturned in defining what needs measuring and tracking.

This is also the first step in understanding your legal requirements and the customer demands you are facing. What do you need to report, when and to whom?

Gathering the data

This is the hardest part especially if you are doing this for the first time, but we have specially designed tools to help make this process easier.

You will have access to an experienced consultant who you can turn to for advice and guidance and who will answer your queries.

Calculating your GHG Emissions – Once all the data is gathered, the Wylde team will take you to the next stage by carrying out your GHG emissions calculations using an accredited and robust software platform.

Understanding the data – Our team will analyse the results and arrange a follow up meeting with you to go through the reports. This will help you understand the data and what it means for your individual business, and will give you the information you need develop an effective reduction strategy. We will also provide you with guidance on how to communicate the results and the steps you need to take to satisfy customer demands or legal compliance.

Reporting and Carbon Reduction Planning

Reducing your impacts doesn’t stop at establishing your emissions data. You will now want to explore how you can reduce your carbon footprint by taking positive action.

Our team’s years of experience supporting businesses in developing their sustainability strategy, mean that they are expert at interrogating organisations to deliver positive outcomes. Once you are happy with the calculations, our consultant will work with you to produce your Carbon Reduction Plan.

We will support you in setting out your decarbonisation pathway. What targets need to be put in place to meet your goals? Many businesses choose to align their targets with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). Its Corporate Net Zero Standard is focused on halving emissions before 2030 and achieving Net Zero emissions before 2050.

Key Information…

How long will it take?

The size and complexity of your business operations and supply chain will determine how long this process will take. If you have robust processes and systems in place for capturing financial and operational data, this will shorten the time required.

We have completed GHG Baseline Emissions for some clients within a fortnight whilst others have taken considerably longer. Much will also depend on the pressures you are facing. If a customer is pressing you for data, then you’re going to need to act more quickly.

How much will it cost?

Our fees are based on the time required to carry out the tasks involved. This will be determined by the size and complexity of your business and its operations and how much data you have ready access to.  Our fees also cover the cost of software licenses and the reports generated.

Prices start from £2,500 plus VAT for a business that has ready access to its data and which has only one or two sites.

Companies that have multiple sites and a complex supply chain will require more time and ultimately cost more, get in touch with our team to discuss pricing and flexibility.

Who needs to be involved?

You will need to involve staff from your Finance team to provide financial data from invoices. You may also need to involve Operations staff and members of your Procurement team if you have oneThis can be decided at the initial Scoping Meeting.

What are the benefits?

Conducting a baseline emission assessment is a prerequisite for decarbonisation. You can only manage what you can measure and gaining visibility around impact is a major milestone on the path to securing a more sustainable future.

    • By measuring emissions businesses can identify opportunities to reduce environmental impact and cut operational costs.
    • Businesses that have the information they need to report on emissions can help manage risks in the face of climate change.
    • Managing emissions leads to lower energy and resource costs.
    • Taking action on emissions reduction has a positive impact on brand reputation and helps secure competitive advantage.
