Beyond Compliance – One-day Workshop for ISO 14001 Technical Training

At Wylde Connections we are continually adapting our learning offer to help businesses navigate the sustainability landscape. Bookings are now open for the latest addition to our portfolio – a one-day ISO 14001 Technical Training Workshop. Our expert tutors will ensure your team is equipping with the knowledge and practical actions needed to drive environmental improvement across operations.

ISO 14001 is the international standard for Environmental Management Systems, providing a structured framework to help organisations reduce their environmental impact, comply with legal requirements, and drive continual improvement. It is a live system that only works when people have the technical training to apply its principles in their day to day roles. It relies on staff understanding environmental risks, legal duties, and operational controls to manage impacts effectively.

Clause 7.2 of the standard clearly states:

“The organisation shall ensure that persons doing work under its control are competent on the basis of appropriate education, training or experience.”

This clause makes staff training a compliance obligation. Every individual whose work can impact the environment must be trained, competent, and aware of how their role fits into the wider Environmental Management System (EMS). Awareness of the environmental policy, significant aspects and impacts, and day-to-day controls is critical. The intention is to empower staff to take ownership of environmental performance, report concerns, and take small but meaningful steps to reduce the risk of harm.

As more businesses embrace the standard to manage their environmental impacts there has been an increase in demand for appropriate workforce training. At Wylde Connections we have responded by developing a one-day ISO 14001 Technical Training Workshop, designed to help operational teams understand and apply the principles in their daily work.

Our expert trainers and consultants have focused on helping businesses meet their obligations and manage risks through interactive scenario-based training. Th workshop session engages learners at all levels and is accessible for staff across every function, from warehouse and logistics to supervisors, maintenance, and site managers.

Available either online or in person, the session covers:

  • Why environmental management matters, linking global challenges to local actions
  • What pollution is and how it travels through source–pathway–receptor routes
  • Legal frameworks and enforcement
  • An introduction to ISO 14001 and how it supports good governance
  • How to assess environmental aspects, impacts, and operating conditions
  • Small changes that individuals can make to reduce risk and improve performance
  • Delegates making personal commitments and agreeing practical next steps aligned with ISO 14001’s principles of continual improvement.

Case Study: TDP

Earlier this year, Wylde delivered this training to TDP Ltd, a Derbyshire-based manufacturer of outdoor furniture. The business already has strong environmental credentials making its products from recycled plastic and winning the King’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development. Yet the business recognised that it needed to further strengthen its EMS and prepare for upcoming audits.

The workshop was led by Wylde trainer James Wyse FIEMA, who facilitated this session filled with discussion, real-world examples, and team reflection.

TDP’s Commercial Director Kym Barlow commented:

“The training was really insightful. James made the content very engaging, and the team is now far better informed to manage impacts and embed best practice.”

Participants explored the relevance of legislation, how pollution from routine activities can impact local communities, and how even small decisions in areas such as waste segregation or equipment use can have a major impact on environmental risks. Staff left with a clearer understanding of their responsibilities and a renewed commitment to improving performance.

The workshop helped TDP:

  • Secure legal compliance and audit readiness
  • Reduce operational risks and pollution incidents
  • Demonstrate strong governance and accountability to clients
  • Improve staff engagement and retention
  • Show tangible progress towards ESG goals

As a learning organisation, Wylde Connections brings this workshop into a wider portfolio that includes our Stickerbook training, Sustainability Awareness for Leaders and Managers and IEMA-accredited environmental qualifications.
