From Intention to Impact: The P & M Group Sustainability Report 2025

Founded in 1987, The P & M Group is a key supplier to main contractors operating in the cold store industry. The Gloucester-based business has just launched its latest sustainability report, marking a significant milestone on a journey of transformation. Its achievements emphasise how embedding responsible practice becomes a driver of performance, culture and sector influence. For Wylde Connections the report is testament to a trusted partnership based on long term commitments and expert guidance help deliver positive impacts, build resilience and lead by example.

When we first met P & M, it was clear that the values of the Group were already aligned with ethical and responsible business practice. There was an appetite to build on that foundation and to develop a coherent strategy that could guide decisions and future proof the organisation in an industry facing increasing pressure to decarbonise and demonstrate responsible practice. That initial engagement led to the launch of Project Acorn, the Group’s sustainability strategy, which was grounded in the belief that meaningful progress comes from small but deliberate actions built over time.

Wylde’s role in those early stages was to undertake a thorough strategic business review, assessing the organisation through a sustainability lens and identifying both risks and opportunities in the value chain. This scrutiny enabled the creation of the Group’s first Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan, providing the roadmap for interventions that would shape the next steps. We supported the development of the first sustainability report in 2023 and have since maintained an ongoing partnership with Group Sustainability Manager Joanne Swift, offering mentoring, consultancy, training and technical guidance. Our Five Step Consultancy Programme has framed the evolution of Project Acorn, guiding P & M through each stage of Assess, Develop, Implement, Engage and Transform.

Decarbonisation

This year’s Sustainability Report shows just how far the Group has progressed. Structuring the 2025 report around the three Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) pillars has given renewed clarity to its achievements and ambitions. Environmental progress is particularly notable. With Wylde’s support, P & M transitioned to a more accurate carbon calculation approach using Carbon Alt Delete, replacing broad spend based methodologies with granular activity data. As a result, the Group achieved a decrease of more than 3,158 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, representing a 13% reduction, despite an increase in overall turnover. This improvement was driven by better quality data, enhanced supplier collaboration and strengthened emissions auditing processes.

Wylde has helped the Group to establish its greenhouse gas emissions baseline across all three scopes and meet the requirements of Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR). We have also played a pivotal role in improving data capture, introducing internal auditing practices and supporting the expansion of the sustainability team through the appointment of a data analyst. The report sets out detailed emissions trends for ISD Solutions UK, ISD Solutions Australia, PLG Insulations and Tysoe Installations, showing reductions that are the result of improved metering, refined methodologies and changes to operational behaviour. For instance, ISD UK achieved a 20% reduction in electricity emissions, while waste related emissions fell by almost 90% due to more reliable weight-based reporting.

Social impact

Beyond environmental performance, the report demonstrates major progress in social value and workforce development. Wylde has supported P & M in embedding sustainability across its workforce, including through the design and delivery of sustainability awareness training for managers and through the introduction of the Stickerbook learning platform. This innovative approach won national recognition at the Cold Chain Sustainability Awards, where the Group’s education programme was named Business Climate Initiative of the Year. The report highlights how training has strengthened internal capability and increased sustainability literacy across the business.

The partnership with STEMAZING is another standout achievement. What began as a handful of colleagues joining the Inspiration Academy has now developed into the P & M for STEM network, enabling colleagues to inspire primary school children and support the next generation of engineers. This work extends the company’s social impact by strengthening representation, building community relationships and developing colleagues’ confidence and leadership skills. Wylde has supported this evolution by helping to align social impact activities with wider ESG goals.

Good governance

The report shows how the Group has strengthened its foundations through improved policies, clearer accountability and more robust processes. With input from Wylde, P & M has enhanced HR governance, reviewed employment practices and taken steps to align policies across UK and Australian operations. It has also increased its engagement in sector governance, including through board membership of the Cold Chain Federation and involvement in the Chilled Advisory Group. This sector wide leadership reflects a maturing approach to sustainability, where the Group is not only improving its own impact but influencing the industry more broadly

Taking the initiative

The company has matured from a business with strong values but no formal strategy, into a sector leader influencing industry standards, educating its workforce, strengthening its supply chain and reducing its carbon footprint. Their achievements show what can be delivered when expertise, ambition and consistent effort come together. It also demonstrates why so many SMEs need structured support to move from informal good practice to measurable, strategic ESG delivery.
